The Diamonds International Rotary Club Charity Golf Classic was initiated in 1999 to raise funds to refurbish the Pediatric Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. Diamonds International decided to sponsor a golf tournament that would raise funds for the Pediatric Ward Refurbishment program. The target was half a million dollars. Since 1999 the tournament has become an annual event with a very strong support group. Sandy Lane has been with us since inception and continues to work with us to meet our targets. By 2000, the Diamonds International Rotary Club Charity Golf Classic raised over $162,500 meeting the target for the completion of the refurbishment program. From 2001 to 2004 the Classic raised $200,000 and these funds went towards a National Scholarship Trust Fund (supported and endorsed by the Government of Barbados) for less fortunate children seeking tertiary education. From 2005 to 2007 additional funds were required for further upgrades to the Pediatric Ward, and in 2008 through the present, funds are being raised for the Intensive Care Unit to increase its bed capacity and support equipment. Corporate Barbados sponsors twenty teams for the tournament at $5,000, of which over 75% of the teams being repeat sponsors of this highly anticipated tournament. Diamonds International takes care of all operating costs, including a prize giving cocktail, prizes and players tokens.
